Adobe’s Photoshop CC is one of the most popular image editing apps for the desktop. It retails for $29.99 per month and $149.99 per year, but you can also grab it outright for $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. Note that you can handle RAW format images with Lightroom CC and Photoshop alike, but Photoshop’s editing canvas is much bigger (up to 50,000 percent) than Lightroom’s.
Adobe’s Lightroom mobile app for iOS and Android is pretty slick. The standalone app incorporates all sorts of useful tools, including an intelligent image tab that pops up onscreen as you browse through your camera roll. There’s also a feature called Live Photos that, once snapped, lets you focus on an image, change filters, or crop and resize it, even as the image’s photo timer plays out. As with Lightroom for iOS, you can pick up Lightroom for Android for free. You can also upgrade to Lightroom for Android for $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year.
There are two new Adobe Photoshop features. The first is the revamped interface, which will feel familiar to old users of Photoshop. It will take advantage of more Apple-friendly features found in iOS, macOS, and watchOS.
The new interface is similar to the design found on a Mac, with a constantly updated screensaver to show you the latest changes in your documents. That can be a handful of years out of date, but at least you’ll know how your file looks on the latest release.
Adobe’s main competitor, Corel, already offers an Aperture-like workspace, and I’m sure Creative Cloud subscribers will be happy to know that their old version of Photoshop CC will be supported for a period of time.
A version of Photoshop for the Mac, for free, will be available for new adopters to try out. If you’re getting a new machine, the suite will be available both through the App Store and on the Adobe website. Creative Cloud will be available in December as a stand-alone service. At that time, you will no longer have to choose whether to use Creative Cloud or Creative Suite.
There are a few key restrictions with this transition to native APIs. Primarily, there are significant performance and stability issues with the GPU APIs when it comes to layered file formats, such as Photoshop’s PSD or PNG. Supporting these legacy file formats is now therefore considered a feature that can be sunsetted in the future.
With native GPU support, however, Photoshop on the Mac can now render layers and masks on the GPU, improving performance and enabling complex editing scenarios more quickly. This ability is selective, however, as the latest versions of Photoshop does not support Smart Filters or Smart Objects, so there are still workarounds for these legacy features.
