This is a review of Version 24 of Photoshop. However, Adobe is continuously on the road adding new functionality too, so if you’re just dipping your toes into the world of photo editing, I would think you would actually want to get your hands on the latest version, Photoshop 2023. Prior to the release of Photoshop 2023, I played around with Version 24 using a copy I had available on an SD card. It seemed to be more stable than the previous versions and delivers generally faster results. The interface is as simple as the old version, but adds a few new tools: the Layer Control Panel and Smart Brush. Layer Control Panel combines three selectable panel handles for Layers, Channels and Paths, and the new Smart Brush lets you make adjustments on a selection you’ve made. While the latter tool is pretty neat, it’s not the much simpler “Smart Selection,” but what I like most about it is, as David Minot suggests, that you can quickly isolate a corrected area at any stage and bring it into your flattened image.
Use the Gradient tool to quickly create radial and linear gradients and then use them to position and modify your content. Creating interesting gradients is an easy way to give your photos a custom, edited finish.
What It Does: The Magic Wand tool allows you to select an area of an image (or multiple layers) and then correct the area. This can be used for things as simple as unclipping (removing clipping that has been accidentally applied to an image) to more complex applications like correcting color balance for images that have a bad or incorrectly calibrated white balance.
Use the Pen tool to create vector shapes directly on your image, add animation through the Pen tool, and control the pen position. Photoshop is renowned for its robust feature set and Pen is no exception. You’ll find it a useful tool for creating logos, designing guides, and creating special effects to add to your images.
